What determines buoyant force?
Submerge a quarter of a 1 litre object. It displaces 0.25 litres of water, giving about 2.5 N of buoyant force.
Half submersion displaces 0.5 litres, giving about 5 N. The volume under water is what matters.
Full submersion displaces 1 litre, giving about 10 N. Going deeper does not further increase displaced volume.
For adults · discuss together
An external support holds the object. Incompressible water at 1000 kg/m³; g is rounded to 10 N/kg.
