Where does a mirror send light?

Ray at 20° · Ray at 40° · Ray at 60°

Ray at 20°

The yellow ray hits the mirror; the blue ray reflects. Angles are measured from the dashed perpendicular to the surface.

Ray at 40°

Change the incoming ray’s direction. The reflected ray turns too: both angles are equal.

Ray at 60°

Try a larger angle. The ray goes in another direction, but equal-angle reflection still holds.

For adults · discuss together

An ideal flat mirror. Rays are drawn as visible lines although usually invisible from the side in clean air.

Before experience

Ask: “What do you think will happen?” Let the child check his guess first.

After the experience

What has changed? What remains the same? Where can you notice a similar phenomenon?
