How does air enter the lungs?
Find the trachea, two lungs and the diaphragm below. Lungs expand with the chest cavity.
During inhalation the diaphragm contracts and moves down. Chest volume increases, pressure in the lungs falls and air enters.
During quiet exhalation the diaphragm relaxes. Volume decreases and air leaves. Oxygen passes into blood in the alveoli.
For adults · discuss together
Transparent chest; intercostal muscles and detailed alveoli are omitted.
