How can water flow over an edge?

Outlet above water · Outlet below water · Equal levels

Outlet above water

The tube is already full of water. If its outlet is above the source water surface, it cannot sustain an outward flow.

Outlet below water

Lower the outlet below the source surface. A continuous water column flows over the tube’s bend and down: a siphon works.

Equal levels

When levels become equal, the height difference no longer drives flow. A bend alone is not enough.

For adults · discuss together

The short tube is prefilled without air. Levels stay fixed for comparison; losses are not calculated.

Before experience

Ask: “What do you think will happen?” Let the child check his guess first.

After the experience

What has changed? What remains the same? Where can you notice a similar phenomenon?
