Veda · OUT OF PURE CURIOSITY
How can you hide in plain sight?
Green leaves · Sandy background · Snowy background
Green leaves
Find the green insect among leaves. A colour similar to its background makes it less visible.
Sandy background
Change the background to sand. The insect stays the same colour, but contrast increases. It is easier to find.
Snowy background
Green also stands out against snow. Camouflage depends on both the animal and its surroundings.
For adults · discuss together
We compare colour only. Shape, movement, lighting and the observer’s vision also matter in nature.
Before experience
Ask: “What do you think will happen?” Let the child check his guess first.
After the experience
What has changed? What remains the same? Where can you notice a similar phenomenon?
